Last month at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, LG displayed its entire range of new OLED TVs. Despite the intense crowds, the company’s booth on the show floor always has a carnival-like feel that makes it fun to walk through. However, this year at CES, I was happy to be invited to a private briefing that allowed me to get a close-up look at the new TVs, including the LG G4 OLED.
With its powerful gaming features, premium design, and high peak brightness, the LG G3 was one of the best OLED TVs released in 2023. I was naturally excited to see its successor, which packs in a tonne of features to improve usability and performance. Let’s talk about those first before moving on to my personal opinions about the LG G4’s image.
To begin with, the LG G4 boasts a next-generation MLA (Micro Lens Array) OLED panel with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, according to LG Display, the business division of LG that supplies OLED panels to the LG Electronics division. Even though it’s doubtful that real OLED TVs will reach that degree of peak light output in 2024, LG Electronics has revealed that the new G4 TVs will have a brightness up to 70% higher than “conventional” OLED TVs, like the company’s upcoming B4 series.
The 55-, 65-, and 77-inch G4 series models will come equipped with MLA, one of LG’s Brightness Booster Max picture enhancement features. The 83-inch model, which was absent from the G3 series last year, will also have MLA. Bigger isn’t always better. The G4 series will also feature a new 97-inch screen size, and that particular model will not include MLA.
Four times as powerful as the Alpha 9 processor found in the new LG C4 OLED TVs is the new Alpha 11 processor found in both the G4 and M4 (a wireless TV series that is otherwise identical to the G4). Along with a host of additional features, LG’s top OLEDs now have an AI Picture Pro mode thanks to a new processor. These include AI Director Processing, which examines the image to ascertain the director’s intention and adjusts colours accordingly, and “object enhancement by visual perception,” which improves the definition of objects that appear on screen.
You can also turn off the AI Picture Pro mode if you feel that this is all a bit too artificial intelligence-y. Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode is another new picture mode that will be available on LG’s 2024 TVs, including the G4 series models. The new mode, which enables viewing of films and television shows with Dolby Vision HDR at the same low processing level as regular Filmmaker Mode, will be exclusive to LG TVs.
Smart TV, Gaming, and Audio
The LG G4 will offer enhanced gaming and audio performance as well. The LG G3 maxed out at 9.1.2 channels; in contrast, the Alpha 11 AI processor will produce virtual 11.1.2 channels of Dolby Atmos sound. Additionally, a new voice remastering feature will isolate and improve dialogue for better clarity. The TVs will also support wireless lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS audio output when paired with more expensive models from LG’s soundbar lineup. Regarding gaming, the LG G4 series, along with other LG 2024 OLED models, will become the first TVs to be validated at 144Hz, a feat accomplished by Nvidia.
Regarding usability, the updated version of LG’s webOS for its 2024 TVs includes smaller Quick Cards, which function as hubs for app categories like sports, games, smart home, and more on the TV’s home screen. You can now access Quick Cards without leaving the main screen thanks to their dynamic feature and drop-down menu. Additionally, LG has included built-in support for Chromecast, quad-screen multi-view, which allows users to view up to four video sources onscreen at once, and Voice ID recognition, which allows users to switch between multiple viewer profiles via voice commands.
In our review of the LG G3, we criticised the company for not including a stand with the TV. However, the new LG G4 addresses this issue and comes with a two-position stand for the 55- and 65-inch models (a wall mount accessory will be included for other screen sizes). The ATSC 3.0 tuner, which we liked about the LG G3, has been replaced with the older ATSC 1.0 standard in the new LG G4 because of a legal dispute between the company and the owner of an ATSC 3.0 “NextGen TV” tech patent.

Although I was unable to test the G4 with my personal reference 4K Blu-ray discs at CES, I can report that the new TV’s picture quality was excellent in the LG demos that were set up. It was more than bright enough, and the slightly lower lighting in the room made the images pop out dynamically.
I noticed that the blacks were deep when viewing snippets of the Apple TV Plus series Foundation because the G4 was able to accentuate a high degree of shadow detail in both bright and dark scenes. In addition, the HDR highlights were detailed and seemed to pack nearly as much punch as what I’ve seen on mini-LED TVs, which can reach very high peak brightness levels.
During my demo, I did observe that the G4’s screen was a little reflective in brighter lighting (see the above photo). We noticed in our review of the LG G3 that it featured an anti-glare screen and that the picture maintained well in dimly lit rooms, so when we have an opportunity to conduct a thorough review of the LG G4, we’ll have to look into this further.
We anticipate the new LG G4 to be just as expensive as the previous year’s LG G3, which had launch prices of $2,099 / £1,999 / AU$4,195 for the 55-inch model and up to $5,799 / £5,999 / AU$10,995 for the 83-inch model. That being said, the G4 might be worthwhile if you’re interested in obtaining LG’s brightest and most stylish OLED TV for 2024.
